About the Artist

Sue creates bold and colourful, abstract and semi-abstract landscapes, seascapes and still-life paintings from her garden studio. Based in North Cornwall, she often takes inspiration from her walks on the coast, cliffs and moorland.

Towards the end of her teaching career, Sue turned to painting about ten years ago. She explored oils at first, developing her skills at Newlyn School of Art and St Ives School of Painting. She now works mainly with acrylics, experimenting and playing with the medium, sometimes combining the paint with ink, charcoal, pastels or collage.

There are often recognisable features within Sue’s work that suggest a place or object from her experience. Sometimes she paints intuitively, trying to evoke a sense of feeling or simply to explore a limited palette or a particular shape or colour. She enjoys the process of layering paint. Laying down paint, wiping it off, scraping it or even sanding it to reveal previous colours and marks, then adding more layers and repeating the process until the final image emerges.

The paintings in the gallery are all for sale. Please do not hesitate to contact Sue if you require more information or photographs regarding a particular painting
